Hello, Two Wheelers! Yamaha Motorcycles has just announced that the new 2017 Yamaha YZF R1 will be available in the market, starting from April 2017. Last time we reviewed that Yamaha YZF R6 which is still considered to be one of the most powerful motorcycles within its category.So how is Yamaha Motorcycles planning to impress us as Two Wheelers enthusiasts with their latest release? Let’s take a closer look to find out more about the 2017 Yamaha YZF R1.
Yamaha YZF R1 Engine.
Since their major design change in 2015 for the Yamaha YZF-R1, Yamaha Motorcycles made their very best to release a street motorcycle that is pretty much similar to the MotoGP superbikes. There is the YZM-M1 model for track racing of course. However, the Yamaha YZF R1 similarities to the MotoGP motorcycles are recognizable.
The titanium fracture-split connecting rods of this powerful 998 CC inline four cylinder engine, provides its rider with nothing but raw power and linear torque. The materials used for the Derived Crossplane Crankshaft Engine which is similar to those in the MotoGP Supr bikes resulted in a compact and lightweight engine. The Yamaha R1 Top Speed is 179 MPH (don't worry you can push it a little bit further) and can go from 0-60 MPH in 2.6 seconds.
The 6-speed transmission system centralizes the mass of the engine and makes the overall engine length shorter due to its modified input/output shafts. An outstanding modification that contributes significantly to the mass distribution factor.
The Yamaha YZF R1 is loaded with an advanced clutch system that provides the rider with a controlled aggressive downshifting process for hard cornering. In other words, the racer will have more control over the powerful torque of this masterpiece.
The Exhaust System.
The full exhaust system is manufactured mainly from lightweight titanium. Another great add for mass reduction. Also, the compact, midship muffler has a great effect on the Yamaha YZF R1’s mass centralization.
Technology and Electronics.
Now, this big toy has a lot (and we do mean a lot) of technology related sensors and rider aid systems. Let’s see what we got here.
Power Delivery Mode.
The rider has 4 options to choose from, in order to control the throttle-valve opening in relative to the throttle-grip one. This provides you with multiple riding styles according to different conditions.
Lean Angle Traction Control System.
Exiting corners is a very critical issue, especially with an acute leaning angle. Different wheels speeds while exiting a hard corner usually result in an unpleasant skidding experience. That’s history with the brand new 2017 Yamaha YZF R1.
The 10 modes powerful traction system will allow you to control the level of interference of the system to adjust wheel speeds while exiting corners, reducing the chances of a rear wheel skid.
Inertial Measurement Unit.
If you were not impressed by the technology features that were previously mentioned, then you better check this out. The IMU is basically a gyro sensor and an accelerometer that have a 125 calculations per second rate.
The IMU works side by side with the ECU with controls the Yamaha Ride Control System (YRC). The YRC includes the Power mode, the Traction Control (both were discussed earlier in this article), Slide Control System, Quick Shift System, Lift Control System, and last but not least, the Launch control system.
Slider Control System.
Again, this feature is very beneficial when it comes to accelerating during the exit of a hard corner. It simply controls the engine power during acceleration to prevent sliding. You have 4 modes in this system to control the level of interference.
Did we mention that his feature is available in the YZM-M1 model too? (pretty cool huh?)
Lift Control System.
We guess the feature’s name is self-explanatory. It basically controls the wheeling thingy while accelerating. Sometimes the rider is just seeking for control while speeding rather than showing off. The system has 4 settings too.
Race Start Control.
The Yamaha YZF R1 will make sure that your RPM won’t exceed the 10,000 limit even with the full throttle when you are launching from a static position. This will provide you with optimum acceleration from zero. The system works with the Lift Control System and the Traction Control System too. Three settings are available for this feature.
An Adjustable QuickShifter.
If you are reading this article, then most probably you don’t need an introduction to the Quickshifter. However, in case you know nothing about it, it’s simply a system that allows you to shift gears up without using the clutch for time saving. The system installed in the Yamaha YZF R1 has 3 settings to choose from.
Ride By Wire Throttle.
That’s another chip that controls the intake and engine power for both low and high RPM. More customizing features at your service to control your beloved motorcycle.
Chassis, Suspension & Brakes.
Enough with all technology gadgets that this big toy is loaded with. It’s time to get back to some basic technicalities again.
Yamaha YZF R1 has a Deltabox aluminum frame along with a magnesium subframe for a lightweight and strong chassis.
The motorcycle is loaded with an inverted front KYB fork with 43mm inner tubes and 4.7-inch stroke. This will give you the desired front-end feel while riding.
More handling and efficient transmission of power to track is at your service with the fully adjustable KYB shocks. A true piece of art.
Improved Chassis Dimensions.
Compared to the previous 2014 Yamaha YZF R1, this model has a shorter wheelbase and a better swingarm to wheelbase ratio for better handling.
Powerful Bakes for a Powerful Machine.
You need powerful brakes to control this beast right? That’s what the manufacturers loaded the motorcycle with; ABS availability is out of the question, of course, it’s the UBS that is interesting. This system prevents undesired rear end motion of the motorcycle while applying front brakes by activating the rear ones too.
Aerodynamics, Lighting & Gauges.
2017 Yamaha YZF R1 experienced mild design changes since the major 2015 redesign. Yet, we can assure you that the aerodynamics is a MotoGP standard one. The turning indicators were even installed inside the side mirrors for less air resistance.
The motorcycle is loaded with LED lights which add even more style to the bike’s bad boy look design. The gauge displays nearly everything from riding modes, tire pressure, fuel level, gear indicator, and of course RPM and Speed.
Did we mention that you can connect your iOS or Android device to the motorcycle via Wifi and Bluetooth to record important data such as lap times, and course mapping? We mean, what else could you possibly need?
